DAY 30

Monday, May 30 2005

Today I did a whole bunch of errands in preparation for picking up my passport tomorrow and heading for Germany. The two primary things were to find super glue to fix my cycle helmet and to find a presta tire valve gauge. Good God, don't they exist somewhere? The search goes on...

If all goes well I will be heading to Koln tomorrow. Finally I will get to do more cycling! :-) This means I may be in the NIZ for the next week or so. Just be patient the journal entries will come eventually.

A big thank you to Internet Cafe Amadeus for having laptop connectivity! That's thinking along the right lines!

Take care everyone and thanks for all the emails!

MANY HOURS LATER...(but the same day)

I have been here for a week now waiting on my passport, perhaps I should have varied my routine. Someone tried to enter my room last night. Thank God it was locked! I was just on the verge between sleeping and waking. I heard the knocking but thought it was part of my dream until the guy started juggling my door handle. I woke up right quick. I kept asking whoever it was to please go away. He wanted in. No way was I letting any man into my hotel room. I barricaded the door with a spare mattress and stood by the window ready to scream my head off, it was a flimsy door. My room has no phone. Needless to say it was really creepy.

I found out later it was a local bar fly. The hotel has a bar. Maybe he thought I would be an easy lay? Who knows. Crikey, go find a prostitute! I just stood there for a long time with the mace in my hand hoping he was gone for good, my heart trip lining with every sound. I couldn't fall back to sleep till 4 am in the morning. It was a very long night.

While laying there for all those hours I figured out how he knew which room was mine. Every night I listen to music and hang out the window watching the street life. That's a sure give away right there. What also was a sure give away was that every room on this floor is empty, but mine. I have had the whole floor to myself all week. Kind of eerie sometimes. All the empty rooms have the keys hanging in their doors. Mine didn't and there was music coming from it.

A big thank you goes out to Terri Wynn for being the first one to suggest I bring mace. Nothing further happened. I was up at 7 am ready to leave the place. I un-barricaded my door and went to the ATM to pay off my final balance. It said insufficient funds. That is not the case. I just checked my balance and I have over 2,000 in my account. Man, I just want to pay this hotel and leave.

I'm okay, but there are definite times that I wish I wasn't alone on this trip.
